Layer Cake Sampler – Week 9

As I got to the last two weeks of the Layer Cake Sampler QAL hosted by Amanda of Material Girl Quilts I started to reflect on the blocks up on the design “wall” I’ve hung in my curtain track.  So far I had used every fabric in the collection twice (the Metropia collection has 17 fabrics, which let me make 17 blocks using each fabric twice).  My last two HST color were a black tone on tone and the green bubble/grids.  The green didn’t really work for the bow ties, the black connecting stripes never matched up nicely so I skipped Block 17 and used the last HST I had already cut for Block 18.  I’ve actually had Block 18 ready to finish for a week now.  I had four strips of four HSTs ready, they just needed final block assembly which I finished this morning.

Block 17 was another matter.  I have chosen to be careful about which prints get placed when forming a cohesive unit (such as a flying geese shape) and the bow ties were really getting to me.  I decided to wait until last Friday to see what Week 10 blocks were going to look like before picking the last repeating fabrics.  There are 6 designs in the collection and I wanted to try and have one of each for the last three blocks.  Looking at my design wall I wanted to make sure I didn’t use the same fabrics within a block that I had already chosen.  I didn’t really have a strong teal/green combination and I thought that would work for Block 13.  Before I sewed it all together I wanted to see how the rest of my fabrics played out.

As I tried to work through the last three blocks I kept glancing at my design curtain.  Block 4 was really bugging me.  It was the only block that read as 4 separate blocks within a block (or 8 flying geese).  My husband kept teasing me about how I must be still pondering fabric choices.  I decided it had to come down and reassembled.  I wanted the directional geese to be more “scrappy” looking like the rest of the quilt.

And the results of Block 17?  Last night I finished it with a different HST combination I found that fit with my quilt top:
